Pumpkin Carving: Peacock Jack 'O' Lantern

Last year I did my best Martha Stewart take on pumpkin carving and etched a peacock onto my 15" pumpkin. Here is how it turned out. :)

The other sinister looking pumpkins were done by my fiance and our friends. I had also hoped to do my take on Russian nesting dolls, but ended up running out of time. Maybe I will give it a try this year.

First Class on Swiss Intercontinental Airline

I usually balk at paying a premium to fly first class since I consider my trips to truly start once I have landed/arrived at my destination, but seeing this video makes me want to splurge.

I check the cost of flying from NY to Zurich and it runs $12,000+. Sigh, I've come back down to earth in economy class.

OMG! Snow Peak is on sale at Gilt.com*. If you aren't familiar with Snow Peak, the Japanese company designs and builds an impeccable line of uber functional camping gear. When I saw their products ages ago at REI, I instantly fell in love. Even though most of their stuff is made for the great outdoors, they are so beautifully designed and made that I wouldn't hesitate to use it inside as well.

In particular I've been dying to get my hands on Snow Peak's Iron Grill which is perfect for car campers like me. Like most of their products, the Iron Grill can be set up multiple ways for different functions but it's main purpose is for cooking, grilling, and eating. Previously I've posted about my futile laptop bag search. While I did find some decent options, I never fell in love until now. I go to Columbia Mall in Maryland and often forget that there is an old fashion carousel at the far end. You would think that having the carousel housed in a mall would take away the magic but, it doesn't. It's actually a welcome dose of nostalgia next to the crowded stores brimming with newfangled fads and tech-savvy teenagers. My boyfriend and I love eating ice cream and watching all the kids ride the brightly painted horses. Here's a picture I took at the end of a ride.

I hope you enjoy this gorgeous real life wedding shot by StillMotion.

In my mind this is what a wedding should feel like, subtly emotional yet stunningly meaning-filled. Hehe, kinda like a music video. StillMotion does a fabulous job of capturing all the unique nuances of the couple and their special day without resorting to cheesiness and cliches. I especially love how they incorporated the sounds of the day. Seems obvious that they would include laughter but the sound of rain drops and grass under foot made the already dazzling videography even more lush. Thanks to Doobybrain for sharing the wedding of his friends, Dave and Grace.

PS Would you believe that this video was shot on an digital SLR, Canon 5D Mark II? In a word, WOW. It seems that there is a whole community of filmmakers who use it. I <3 technology.

I love these Adobe Suite pillows made by My Suite Stuff. The 12 x 12 handmade fleece pillows of Adobe application logos are cute, clever, and, at $15 a pop, extra affordable. Eek, I will have to pick up all of them for my web mastering, graphic designing, video editing, and photography loving boyfriend. Ooh, I hope My Suite Stuff comes out with the other 7 Suite logos and a bigger Euro sized version. Linen, would be nice.

My boyfriend loves sending me YouTube videos. One video that really made an impression on me was of a storm trooper dancing in the streets of Tokyo. He wasn't particularly good but it made me smile to see him delight everyone with his costume and his spunky bravodo. Ever since then, I have secretly wanted to to perform a random act of dance. Yestermorrow Design/Build School

I'm dying to take a class at Yestermorrow Design and Build School in Vermont where they not only hold workshops on building treehouses (a life-long dream of mine), but also in sustainable design, construction, woodworking, and gardening. After running across classes and courses like the list below, I am seriously considering ditching my vacation plans so I can take a workshop instead. They make it incredibly convenient with affordable onsite housing and even a work exchange program (1 hour of work = $10 off). So attractive in this economy. Living in a tiny townhouse, I don't have much of a backyard but what little I have, I would love to pave with paving stones by Oldsjö Hultgren Design. There is an Escher-esque quality to their designs, whether it is their tiles, paving stones, lights, or carpet. I love that they can be configured in multiple ways.

If there was one place I would do all my gift shopping, it would be on Etsy.com. Today while I was shopping for a farewell gift, I came across so many things I wanted to buy for myself. Isn't that always the case? There is a good chance I will splurging on one (or all ^_^) of these items.

Lets start off with one of the niftiest things that I saw. Pictured above are matchbook business cards by STORYBYMIA. What could be handier than having a "book" of business/calling cards ready in your purse or pocket sans case or carrier. Each set comes with three books of six in yellow, blue, and pink on 80lb stock.

Some other items that I'd love to get my hands are these hats by TOMOKOHARA. Since I prefer knitted hats, I was drooling to death when I saw these. They look so hip and cool in a UK mod way.

My last pick comes from YAELFRAN. I totally love the whimsical nature of this ring. It completely belies the age of the designer, a forty year old mother of two. Looks like she is still young at heart in her designs and especially in her choice of material--shrink plastic!

Dreamy RVs: The Airstream

Today I drooled over the Airstream website. :) If that wasn't enough, I somehow ended up on iTunes listening/watching podcasts of Airstream owners. (Someone please stamp geek on my forhead.) I probably would have ended up in an Airstream forum or worse bidding on one on Ebay if I hadn't stopped myself. Before I stopped, I came across some wise words that clearly conveys the beauty of RVs and their appeal to me. Editor of Dwell, Allison Arieff succinctly states:

"Trailers so perfectly illustrate Charles Eames’ famous maxim, 'good design comes from constraints.' Every inch of space is exploited to the fullest. Every domestic need is addressed..."

How perfect would be to live in a "house" where everything nook and cranny serves a need and no space is wasted. It's been my dream to own an RV forever. Today when I saw the price tag of $45K on a shiny 2007 model, I asked my boyfriend if we could buy an RV instead of a condo/house and live in it for a year or two. (Hehe, I need to enjoy being semi-young and foolish while I can.)

An Unexpected Visitor: Zoë Johnston

This weekend I received a very special email from one of my favorite singers. I'm still in a state of disbelief. How she found me, I don't know but it seemed that she very much appreciated my PREVIOUS POST on her. After she read about my difficulty over finding her CD Happenstances, she contacted me to offer a copy. Once I overcame the shock, I politely declined. (My boyfriend had already gotten me a copy for my birthday.) Still, I was crazy honored that she wrote to express her appreciation and, that to me, was priceless.

So here's to chance encounters on the world-wide, wonderful web and Zoë Johnston for making my week. ;)

ps Would you believe that I initially mistook her for a classmate by the same first name? I told her that I thought it was cool that she had the same name as a singer and that she should check her out when she had the chance. Life can be funny-haha and funny-unexpected.

The Solar Decathlon

Today I went to the Solar Decathalon and I found myself in the company of some of the most innovative and creative architects, engineers, and designer students around. What made this event even more enjoyable was that, along with hundreds of other people, I was able to admire and walk through the fruits of their labor. The SOLAR DECATHLON is an international competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy where 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The other awesome twist to today was that I had at my disposal the expertise of two highly skilled carpenters to explain away all the things I didn't understand. Carpenter friends are the coolest.

I'd love to post some pictures but since I was trampsing around in close quarters with a minimum of 20 other people most of my pictures were awkward.

Solar Decathlon

One house that I particularly enjoyed was House 112 not just because it was one of the most beautifully designed energy-effiecient home ever, but because they used some ideas that I have long fiddled with in my designs. Just to be clear on this matter, I am in no way implying that they used my design. Instead they had a design that was very similar to a design that I had conceptualize in my mind. I have been dying to create a free standing studio built on a platform that allowed for storage as well as the installation of a "murphy bed" in the floor. I use the term murphy bed loosely because instead of the bed tucking away into the wall, in my design the bed would be built into the floor with a cover to tuck it away. It was so inspiring to see that other designers had considered such a design feasible and had executed it with great flare.

Here is some background info on this house: This house in particular was designed by the Univeristy of Technology in Germany. While there were many houses worthy of accolade and recognition, the construction of House 112 was exceptionally executed, in addition to being one of the most innovative. Just imagine the Volkswagen of modular homes and that's what I found myself oohing and aahing over. With crazy cool ideas, like solar shutters that move with the sun, sinks and ovens that hide away as well as movable bathroom walls, they were definitely not the underdogs of the competition. Much of the technology used in building the home were prototypes that the students help to create with big wig German companies, and often the companies created one-of-a-kind custum components to suit their building needs. When I asked how much it cost to create the house, one student estimated that the costs exceeded $1.2 million dollars. (Sigh) I wish the footage that I shot had survived the import process because I can barely touch the amount of innovative details that went into the house. Remember the shutters I told you about? Well that is the first layer the the shell of the house. Much like the human skin, the house was constructed with different layers with the solar shutters being the first layer.

Duets

I love duets. Not the cheesy old duets of the 80s or 90s but the simple and heartfelt duets of bands like the Stars or the Weepies...two people simply making gorgeous harmony. I especially like the interchange between male and female vocal when the song is not lovey dovey but emotionally charged. It can add a totally new dimension to the music.

Caribou Coffee

What is it about Caribou Coffee's interiors that I find so much more inviting than Starbucks? Could it be the charm of a warm, rustic lodge with exposed beams, plenty of windows, and a cozy fireplace? It doesn't hurt that Caribou encourages lingering with spacious floor plans and tons of seating to leisurely enjoy a cup of joe. No wonder I can't help but find it much more appealing than Starbucks' dark and intimate (ahem, cave-like) contemporary interiors. I always feel like I'm ordering coffee in a tunnel when I'm at Starbucks.

Still I do love Starbuck's coffee. Mmmm, toffee nut latte.

Halloween Costumes

Halloween is coming and I feel under-prepared. Every year my boyfriend and I always plan on dressing up but find ourselves without a costume. Last year I ordered custom-made Spartan cheerleading costumes (from the classic SNL skit) but had to ditch that plan last minute. Call me picky but I was unhappy when I found how inaccurate the costumes came out. (Watch SNL and you will see that the outfit hardly look like the original.)

Does anyone have any costume ideas for us? Also, I'd love to know what everyone else will be wearing so please share.

How is it that some one can take the same ideas as someone else and make it better, truer, and new? I don't know but, as designer, I aim to achieve the same kind of harmony that Stevie Ann reaches with Toxic, a song originally released by Britney Spears. Where Britney only managed to grind out an unsubstantial pop song, Stevie Ann croons out a soulful serenade. The end results: a fresh perspective on an old song.

In honor of artists like Stevie Ann: Cheers to "redesigning" with substance and character!

Great shopping in Long Beach, CA

Blue Windows is a cute boutique that I came across while shopping in Long Beach, California. If given the choice of shopping at this store or Anthropologie, I would pick Blue Windows. In many ways both these store carry the same style of products but I notice that while Anthropologie carries some nice, pricey products, Blue Windows carries a higher quality of designers. For example, when it comes to jewelry I love that Blue Windows carries Shaesby and Me & Ro.

Smart Cars

This past Saturday, my boyfriend and I went to Baltimore, Maryland to test drive a Smart Car. Working in deeply congested Georgetown, DC, my boyfriend has been dreaming of the day that these cars hit the US market. The silly man has been pestering me to trade in my beloved Honda Element for the Smart Car. The typical response from me has been "fat chance" until I drove one. Now I hesitate just a little bit before saying no.

What's a Smart Car, you ask? Well, if you've ever been to Europe then you've probably seen these cute two-seater. At about 1/3 the size of the average sedan, the Smart Car is the perfect commuter car. It get 40 miles per gallon and due to it's size, allows you to park in even the smallest of spaces. The car can reach speeds of 90mph and have an extremely rigid body designed by Mercedes. It's scheduled to be released in the fall of 2008, debuting at $12,000 with the panoramic sunroof version at $14,000 and the convertible at $17,000. I personally found the car to be extremely roomy with enough space in the hatch back area my rat pack ways. In their commercial they show a 7" man fitting quite comfortably. The only issue I had with the car was that it could drive a little smoother. I am no car fanatic but even I noticed the hesitation between 1st and 2nd gear. In Europe they only sell the manual version, so it seems they have yet to refine the conversion to automatic. If it hadn't been for that minor problem I would have been very tempted to put the $99 deposit down for what seems to be a very affordable and fun option for weary commuters.
We particularly loved the white cabrio style convertible. My boyfriend thought it looked like a baby killer whale so we have dubbed it Shamu. :)

The Preparation for Olivia's First Birthday Party

The day before the party, my boyfriend and I went to help setup some of the decorations. Monica unni (translation: sister in Korean) had ordered a Paris kit online which included:
- (1) 20 ft cardboard Eiffel Tower,
- (4) 100-bulb christmas lights for the Eiffel Tower
- (4) semi-circular paper hedges,
- (1) black "wrought-iron" cardboard fence,
- (2) potted flowers made of cardboard and tissue paper,
- tissue paper grass,
- (6) cardboard 10 ft lamp posts.

I did not glean many prices from unni but I HAD to know the price for such charming decorations. It seems that the cost to bring Paris to the US is $1200.

NOTE: The Eiffel Tower pictured at the party is only 16 feet high. We had to modify it to make it fit the 16 feet ceiling of the hotel.

In the picture both Monica unni and Jina unni are blowing up the balloons for the lamp posts. Isn't that such a clever idea?

The balloon company also joined us in setting up some of their decorations the night before. Monica unni had commisioned them to create balloon storefronts, signs, and centerpieces so they had their work cut out. Wait until you see the gorgeous hot air balloon center pieces that they created.

Since the itinerary included:
1. Shop at the bookstore
2. Shop at the old fashion candy store
3. Bake at the patisserie
4. Visit the Louvre Museum
5. Visit street vendors-caricature artist
6. Visit Madeline's world

The creative balloon company created 4 storefronts which included:

And behind the storefronts, Monica unni set up different shops and stations for the kids to enjoy.

At the candy store she had prepared jars upon jars of old fashion candies with bags for the kids to fill.

At the patisserie Monica unni had cookies for the kids to decorate. Unni had some local bakers whip up some Madeline sugar cookies based upon some sketches. These cookies actually came with a set of edible ink markers and bags of fresh butter cream for the kids to decorate with. She even splurged and ordered up dozens of real disposable chef hats for the kids to wear as well as an authentic chef outfit for her neice, who was to man the station.

At the book store, she left out miniture copies of Madeline for the kids to take home.

And finally at Madeline's World, unni set up a Madeline doll house and accessories for the kids to play with. It seems that she had to do some major outbidding in order to get her hands on the now discontinued Madeline dollhouse. When she found the prices too outrageous, she purchased some Barbie dollhouse knockoffs and spray painted over the bubble gum pink. It was way cheaper and totally worth all the toxic fumes.

As for the "visit to the Louvre," we hid 150 laminated pictures for the kids to look for with art supplies ready for the winners.

The last detail I will leave you with is that Monica unni ordered a black uniform for my boyfriend to wear as the customs agent. She wanted him to stamp all the "passports" invitations to gain entrance into "Paris." (Hehe, the costume made my boyfriend look like Fidel Castro. Makes me sorry that I don't have any pics to post.)

Even before I came across these words, I've always wanted to design indoor spaces that complement and relinquish the focus to the natural environment. It is my ultimate dream to design prefabricated homes that invite the outdoors in as well as the indoors out. To me, living with nature is almost if not more important than living in a home.

Of course I love my creature comforts as much as the next person, which is why I would want to design extremely functional, space efficient, environmentally-friendly modular cottages. Why cottages? I love the idea of modern homes but want the comfort, coziness, and style of a cottage. Who do I imagine my customers to be? Perhaps some baby boomers looking to downsize and simplify their life? Or a newlywed couple starting from scratch? Or a family looking for an addition without the headache? Really though, I will be designing for myself. And what I want is a piece of good ol' planet earth and a way to enjoy it even when I'm inside.

While visiting the Japanese American National Museum in LA, I came across these cute wildflower and herb matchbooks for $2.50. These ingenious "matches" are filled with seeds that you can plant and grow. These books are twice the size of a typical matchbook and are the perfect option for a green wedding or business promo. You can have some custom ordered for the grand openning of your business at $1.85 a pack and a minumum order of 5000. I know, not so cheap at that quantity but it is a custom order.

For a wedding, it would work perfectly for a wedding themed "The Perfect Match." You could make the favors extra cute with small terra cotta pots and fancy ribbon.

The Inspiration for My Office

On the last day of my California trip, I managed to squeeze in a trip to the Pacific Design Center and it was pure heaven. I went crazy and requested samples galore and took pictures when they would let me. (I hope to have a post up by the end of the month since I would love to share all my pics and samples. I know, I am pretty late on some of my promises but I will have them up even if it kills me.)

While I was at the PDC, I saw this tile in a stone and tile showroom and fell in love. For quite some time I have been intrigued by playing cards suits (heart, diamond, clover, spade) and their use in design; I love the spade and clover in particular and this tile spoke to me. Tell me what you think.

Some other motifs that I currently enjoy are ginko leaves, fish scales, griffins, peacocks,...I could go on and on.

If I didn't need a rolling laptop bag, I would have snatched up this bag from KNOMO when they were having their summer clearance. These bags normally range around $400 but they truly are the ultimate in laptop carriers.

(This bag is the slimmer version of the Samara which is roomier and has a closing flap. Alas though, neither models are available directly from Knomo due to the clearance and it is a hard brand to find in the states. The Challenge: BUY USED!

Today I bought a $250+ Elfa system for $150 thanks to Craigslist. Driving home I felt quite satisfied with my used purchase and it got me thinking. Hmm, used is useful. I should buy more used items since buying used is practical, cost-efficient, and enviroment friendly. Also, when you think about it, it can be quite adventurous. Buying used leaves a lot of room for re-invention and creativity. Hmm. Used = Good.

And as the car sped on towards our destination, my thoughts started to churn and brew. And before long I found myself blurting out a very bold challenge to my boyfriend:

"Let's buy everything used for one year!"

Everything?! Even I reeled back from my own idea. What was I suggesting?! I started to picture myself strolling down the aisle of a thrift store looking for a bra and a comforter? (Shudder) Ok, maybe not everything. Obviously we needed some conditions. So the challenge morphed and became: Let's buy used for items over $50. (This excludes gifts which can be bought new at $100 or less. It only seems fair that we only subject ourselves to our new, ahem, gently preowned lifestyle.)

I never thougth my boyfriend would agree to it, but he did. Perhaps it was the looming purchase of his new condo or the daunting price of an engagement ring. ;) (haha, i just threw that in there.) I don't know. But my name-brand-loving, expensive-tech-toy-feinding boyfriend agreed to my challenge and we even shook on it. I did have some second thoughts though right before we sealed the deal. How would I be able to wait one year for all my big purchases? My heart bled for the new laptop and soon to be released wide-screen ipod that I've been dying to buy. Also, did I mention that I'm the kind of shopper that rarely miss the opportunity to stand in line overnight for Black Friday? You can see why the shop-a-holic in me felt betrayed.

My boyfriend on the other hand immediately started looking for loopholes.
"So, let me get this straight. If I buy a Red (a new HD camera expected to retail for $17,500) for $14,000 used, then it's ok?"
"Uh huh." I was saying yes but my head was shaking no. Luckily for me, my boyfriend knows exactly which answer to follow. I think...Something tells me that this year is going to be quite an adventure. Wanna check back to follow our progress and keep us straight? Something tells me we will need all the moral support we can get. ;)

I Dream of Sewing Machines...

I came across one on Craigslist and knew I had to have one. Who cares that I can't sew. Skills be darn, I'm sure I can learn; I've always wanted to.

The machine that I've found is broken but there is a society of antique sewing machine lovers who have inspired me to consider restoring it. The machine in the picture is a fully reconditioned Swinger owned by an avid quilter and collector of sewing machines name Rosey. I've gathered from the site that she still uses it and is part of a quilter's sewing blog that I came across. The posts on the blog are a joy to read. I don't know Rosey's age but the youthfulness of her spirit shines when in one post she likens herself to the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland as she races to catch up with her stitching. Also on the blog is a link that should help me on my quest. TREADLE ON is a site dedicated to promoting and restoring handpowered antique sewing machines. One awesome feature that they have on TreadleOn.net is a market place for people to list and buy sewing machines or parts. There's even a blog to showcase the latest machines for sale called SEWING MACHINES WANTING A NEW HOME created by sewing machine extraordinaire, Jacqui. Jacqui and her husband restores them. Perhaps, my future sewing machine is there waiting for me. (I love her site so much I have made it one of my permanent links under Sew Wonderful.)

My Closet and My love for the Elfa System

Jenn at AN EYE FOR I:NTERIOR is a mind reader. Jenn's latest post is on custom closets which is exactly what I had on my mind this weekend. Of course my ideas were no where close as elaborate as the pictures on her blog. (Click on the work CLOSET to see her post.) Mine was a small DIY project. This weekend my boyfriend and I painted my closet so I could finally install my Elfa system. (I sheepishly admit that it's been sitting around for almost a year.)

The Elfa system is a great affordable option if you want to create your very own custom closet. Although I initially cringed at the idea of forking over mucho moolah for the Elfa system, it's a much better deal when you consider that cost of one quality dresser is $500+ vs the $300-$700 you might spend with an Elfa system. (My closet costs me $400 and it is 75" wide.) Also, since your clothes are completely confined to your closet, you have more space in your bedroom.

Three outstanding features of the Elfa system is it's easy installation, versatility, and the customer service. The Elfa system is designed so you do not have to be handy to customize your closet. The only thing you attach to your wall is one piece of steel which doesn't even need to be attached to studs. It's so easy that I managed to install an entire wall unit by myself. I designed a home office/craft room/design studio using the Elfa system. So far I've organized and filled my wall unit with a full bookcase worth of books, oodles of craft and paper supplies, office supplies galore, 3 printers (including the wide Epson R1800 and two all-in-one inkjets), my laptop, one large Carl rotary trimmer, and I still have two empty shelves and enough room for two task areas. Did I mention that this room is only 11x12 and I have a twin bed and an additional full length bookcase in there? Truly, I am a testiment that the reps at The Container store are wizards at solving major clutter problems and design obstacles. They will provide you with friendly professional help and get you motivated to tackle your overwhelming organization problem. Even a year later, they helped me with my major measurement blooper. He, my measurements were off by one inch. Also, I didn't have my old reciept, and I didn't have my design plan. So they looked up my old, old, old plan, recut one of my pieces, and doublechecked to make sure that my design would still work. Talk about some awesome customer service.

For those of you who still cringe at the idea of forking over $400 for a closet organizing system, I have two suggestions:

- buy the Elfa during their annual sale in February to get 25% off. They also have a sale in October but it is only 20% off.
- buy a Rubbermaid system. My friend has installed two in his home and he swears by the quality and especially the price. It is 1/3 the cost but less room to customize.

pps I painted my closet blue since I happened to have it lying around. I'm a bit unhappy with the color since it clashes with my Anthropologie bedding. (The blue is lighter in the picture.) So I'm considering repainting it a lighter shade or just white. Anyone care to make some suggestions? I'd love for my closet to have a dash of personality but still remain somewhat neutral. FYI: My Elfa system is silver with birch accents.

In a forest...

That was the theme I was going for when I asked my framer to work his magic on this cute FREE!! sketch sent to me by one of my favorite Etsy artist AshleyG. Along with the other prints that I purchased, Ashley generously sent me scraps and sketches as her stationary and packaging. I'm not sure if this is her normal practice but she has blessed me twice.

This 15"x16" custom frame cost me mucho pesos since it was made with archive quality materials. My eyeballs popped out of my head when I saw the bill but my pocket was soothed when I saw the sticker that told me why. I'm not sure that I need it, but my framer has a mind of his own. He originally suggested that I use white matting and a thick black wood frame, but I had fallen in love with the idea that this little fellow was walking in forest. Once I spotted the silver leaf frame, I could not be dissuaded and I eventually wore him down. I know, I know nothing about framing. I must admit, after bringing it home, I had some doubts. I started to regret not taking his advice. The picture wasn't quite how I imagined it. My framer was extremely generous in double matting it with a niftly "floating" technique. (I dunno if i just made that term up. I really don't know anything about framing.) But the forest that I imagined seemed dull and not lush.

But time has worked it's magic and I have grown to love it. I think the lush forest that I originally envisioned would have overpowered the simplicity of the sketch. I already had the silver frame drawing attention away from the little man, he might have gotten lost in a sea of green.

ps I would love to see other people's art and framework so perhaps you guys can save that for a future post. I'll be keeping an eye out.

My Passport to Paris

It finally arrived today...my passport to Paris! One diminutive passport cradled inside a United Airlines ticket holder. (I wonder if they picked those up at the airport.) If you are just joining us, check out my MADELINE IN PARIS POST to get up to speed.

Although I had announced to one and all that I had been invited to baby Olivia's first birthday, I had not received an invitation until today. When I opened up the passport, inside was my boyfriend's old high school photo; his personal information (just like a real passport); dates, time, and location of the party; fake date/time stamps; the day's itinerary and this cute poem:

Off we go to the City of Lights
Paris is the true delight
In the distance a dazzling sight
So bring your passports boys and girls
To take a trip around the world
So we can shout joyeux anniversaire
Or Happy Birthday as you would say
To Olivia on her big day

:) As if the passport wasn't charming enough, the poem was written by my boyfriends other sister. She mentioned that she had written 3 stanzas at least only to have it whittled down to this cute poem. I'm dying to know what the rest of the poem was like.

3. Bake at the patisserie
4. Visit the Louvre Museum

Truly this is one lady who deserves the title "Hostest with the Mostest."

I know what you are thinking. Who holds parties this lavish for a baby? Well, it is a Korean tradition to honor the very first birthday with the biggest party possible. Yep, it is an all day affair that is precipitated by days of making food and hours of feeding guests. I guess since their family is very Americanized, they've opted to do it in the most kid friendly way possible. In attendance will be their oldest son along with the kids of family and friends. O, and a couple of some very grown up kids as well. ;)

Can't wait.

The Fabric Style Book

Today on Patricia Gray's blog, PATRICIA GRAY INTERIOR DESIGN, I was reminded of the great skill required to design and upholster furniture. I am deliberately using the word design, because much thought and care must be taken in choosing the right fabric, the perfect alignment, and the proper trim. Patricia notes on her post that in France, upholstering is a highly skilled and respected profession. After having come across the book, The Fabric Style Book by Carl J. Dellatore, it comes as no surprise. Truly, I can see how countries such as France might have schools dedicated solely to the art of swathing furniture with fabric. Check out Patricia's post, to catch a glimpse of some finely upholstered pieces. Looking at them had me wishing for more so here are some pictures from The Fabric Style Book. In the book, Carl takes various pieces of furniture and redresses them with different fabrics to show off the amazing effect fabric and upholstering has on design. Be prepared to do some serious drooling if you pick up the book.

Last year my color of the season was navy blue for the winter; this year, I feel compelled to adorn myself with grey. Does anyone care to predict the "in" color for this upcoming fall and winter? Hmm, with all the bright colors of the past seasons, I feel inclined to pick muted nudes and pinks with a dash of soft grey. I think my senses need the calmness and warmth of hues in muted shades. Though I must admit I've had an inclination for rusty coral red all this year and I don't expect it to wear off any time soon.

CYCLOCITY: Public Bike Sharing System

**I found out about Cyclocity in one of my favorite magazines, Dwell. The image is from Dwell's Sept. '07 issue.**

Invented by French firm, JCDecaux, Cyclocity is a bikes sharing system that allows members to use their readily available bikes for an annual fee. Picture this: You pick up a bike down at your local subway station, leisurely pedal around town, and return the bike at another red kiosk scattered throughout the city. Who wouldn't want to conveniently dash around on bikes you can grab and "park" anywhere. :) Ever since the fateful day when it was first introduced in France, its popularity has grown to include Spain, Austria, and Belgium. In fact, Brussel launched Cyclocity to promote their annual "Car Free Day." What a novel idea! The government encouraging the public to bike for their health, reduce emissions, and prevent traffic jams! How do I sign DC up for this program? ;)

It would be nice to have Cyclocity as an option in DC. Although public transportation in Washington DC now accommodates bike riders and and their bikes, (yep, most buses have bike racks up front) rampant bike thieves have made it impossible for me not to feel anxious about taking my bike out and about. I already have enough problems staying upright on my speedy six, eight, ten?! speed without having to worry about my bike being stolen. Hehe, my boyfriend and I have resorted to yelling out "Tim-ber" since I tend to inevitably tip over ever so slowly. What can I say, my motor skill are not so good.

It's companies like JCDecaux that inspire me to purposefully create functional concepts. (content sigh)

A Madeline Inspired Birthday Party

For joy! I've been invited to the very first birthday of baby Olivia, my boyfriend's neice. :) I know it makes me happy just thinking about a baby's first anything.

It seems that this very special party has been inspired by the children's book Madeline in Paris. In accordance with this theme, his sister has taken the time to find 50 authentic looking passports to send out as invitations. Isn't that a charming idea? We've heard some details about a balloon-made candy shop to line the rue (streets) de Paris, but we won't know until we attend. My workspace is covered with post-its. I can go through a whole pack in a week. Perhaps that's what inspired DUNCAN WILSON and Sirkka Hammer to create "PixelNotes." Each peel reveals a new layer of posts for you to use.

My favorite peice by Duncan though is "Snowbench." Inspired by a snow covered bench, the frame has been covered in memory foam and modified to retain the shape of each visitor. Why does this bench seem so poetic to me?

The title of today's entry says it all. PAPA'S TOUR is a great website if you are looking for unique, handmade gifts from some of Scotland's finest artists.

Mostly though, I go to this site for inspiration since the cost of artistry isn't cheap. Also, surfing the world wide web can get you a little lust crazy or shop happy. There are too many things out there that can make a person green with envy.

I love the way this scarf drapes and the fact that it comes with a pin.

Egg cozies, huh? I'm not sure what purpose they serve but what can I say, if I was an egg, I'd want these cozies.

A set of these would look great with some chocolate leather and a nice white sheepskin rug.

Mr. Elephantes: My First Teapot Experiment

May I introduce to you Mr. Elephantes aka Senor Elephantes?

Mr Elephantes is a teapot that I painstakingly made in ceramics. Unfortunately, these photos mask an injury. Sadly, Mr. Elephantes lost a tusk during his first firing. It was my intention to glue it back on but my boyfriend has convinced me that having one tusk gives him character. Also, I had hoped to thoroughly coat him in a milky white but I'm still a bit timid when it comes to glazing. Does anyone have any glazing tips?

I Dream of Treehouses

Who hasn't dreamt of building a treehouse? :D

Growing up in Port St. Lucie, Florida, the coolest kids on the block had forts high up in the canopies of their backyards. I watched them with envy and promised myself that I'd build myself one even if I was 50. Since I'm more than half way there, last year I took one baby step towards my dream, ahem, goal and looked up treehouse making on the web. That's when I came across both the TREEHOUSE INSTITUTE and the TREEHOUSE WORKSHOP INC. :) Makes you smile just reading it, huh? These organizations (sometimes jointly) hold treehouse workshops to show us regular joe-sephines (pick a version) how to build a treehouse, starting with tree selection, design, engineering, and even rigging and climbing instructions to help you get yourself and your gear up there. Last year I quickly put myself on their email list, and today I recieved an email about a jointly held workshop on Sept. 24-29 in Fall City, Washington. I'm dying to go, but I've taken all the vacations I can take this year so, perhaps for my 30th b-day, I can gift myself a peice of my dream. Anyone care to join me?

FYI: The Treehouse Institute is also a Treesort with accomodations range from camping to your choice of 18 different treehouses and activities ranging from swimming to horseback riding to playing on their numerous forts, swinging bridges, and awesomely high ziplines. Are you oohing and aahing like me?

I love them all but I think "Shy Little Tot" might be my favorite. That and "Shape of Things" reminds me of my boyfriend. He has a cube shaped head. I lovingly call him kak doo ki sometimes. ;) Shameless, I know, but his head really is square. (FYI: Kak doo ki is a spicy Korean side dish of pickled radish cubes. It's the equivalent of kimchi made with radishes. If you're into pickled foods, it is tart, spicy, and sweet all in the same bite.)

Ceramics II

I made this "tile" in my second ceramic class. I use the word "tile" loosely since I'm really not sure how else to define it. Initially, I made it with the intention of creating a series of relief tiles to frame a fireplace. I think it would be stylish and artistic to decorate a fireplace with ceramic murals (porcelain, even limestone or cement?) in lue of the typical wood/marble mantel. So, I tried my hand at making one. This was the result. Due to the subject matter, I think this peice is more suitable as decor than tiling.

Here is my inspiration for the tile. I took this picture in Hawaii while vacationing with my best friends. These beautiful barred doves have been native to Hawaii since the early 1920s. Sounds like a combination that only God could have thought up...ocean, sun, sand, rainbows, and lush tropical forests with liberal sprinkles of white doves. :) Makes me want to post more pictures of paradise.

Me and My Art

So, I thought I would finally post one of my experiments in art.

I have been dabbling in pottery of late and it has fast become one of my loves. I only know how to handbuild but hopefully, I will be ready to move onto wheel throwing soon. Until then, I can't help but find it O-so satisfying to perfect a shape in clay with my own hands.

Here is a pic of my first pottery piece ever. The pictures are of a "green" (dried but not fired) canopic jar in stoneware that I made for ceramics I. I am sad to say that the end product didn't look anything like these pictures. My first attempt at glazing ended in disaster thus no pictures of the finished product.

This picture doesn't do this dress justice. Its looks even better in person. I bought this dress for my boyfriend's sister. We found out that she was pregnant with a baby girl and I wanted to gift her something special. The fact that it was handmade totally added the ooooh factor. It was a steal at $30 by Dandelion.

Recently I got one of my Etsy purchases framed so I thought I would share the before and after. I've purchase multiple print from AshleyG and I actually have a sketch of hers at the framers. I can't wait to get it back. It will be my most expensive custom frame ever and the sketch is only 4"x5". I will post pictures of it as soon as I get it back.

Anthropologie Finds

Hey everyone, I finally recieved my pointillist duvet from Anthropologie and it is even more gorgeous than I expected! It is so beautiful that I had to stop myself from ordering another one. I love buying multiples of my favorite things--some to keep and some to gift. ;) There's nothing better than sharing your favorites with the people you love.

I also nabbed some ILLYRIA pillow shams and they look 10x better in person. The shams are made in India, so the 300 count feels like 500+ count bedding. The workmanship also seems of a higher quality.

One thing to note about the pointillist duvet is that the white pictured online is more of a cream/offwhite. I will try to post some pictures of my buys later this week. In the meantime, here are some pics of more great finds at Anthropologie.

IT'S FINALLY ON SALE!!

After waiting more than 5 seasons, the POINTILLIST BEDDING at ANTHROPOLOGIE is finally on sale!

I fell in love with this set more than a year ago, but ever since they changed from Banana Republic prices to something more akin to BCBG, I stopped shopping there. I had promised myself that I would only buy the bedding if it went on sale. A whole year went by with no sale, so I was sure that this was the year that I would save some money. ;) I am a natural shop-a-holic. It was only by pure chance that I decided to peruse their website today to make this tremedous discovery.

So, I squandered my savings and ordered the duvet and standard shams today. Even still, I hemmed and hawed over it for quite some time. I really wanted the euro shams but they have been sold out for a while. Still, I'll take what I can get.

Here is another set I have been drooling over. I love the print on the euro sham and the underside of the duvet but I am a little iffy about the print on the topside of the duvet. The Marriette duvet also seems quite charming but the picture looks better in the catalogue.

Smithsonian Unveils Korea Gallery

The Korea Gallery was unveiled with a bang this month, thanks to a gorgeous fashion show put on by world renowned fashion designer Madame Lee Young Hee and Gimga Media Group. Madame Lee Young Hee has been annually regaling the east coast with her beautiful designs of traditional Korean clothes, but this year's show was the best by far.

Living so close to DC and being Korean, I feel warm and toasty knowing that the Smithsonian honored us with a full exhibit. Now if only we could get some Korean actors/actress, musicians, and writers to enter the national spotlight.
